Montessori first

Real Montessori. Small by design. All in Spanish.

Montessori classrooms are calm, orderly, and full of real work: pouring, sweeping, counting, tracing letters, caring for plants. Children choose their activity and repeat it until they've mastered it, with a teacher nearby to show the next step. With three teachers for at most twelve children, no child gets lost in the crowd. And every one of those moments happens in Spanish.

  • Three teachers, twelve children at most
  • Real materials at child height, one-on-one lessons
  • Teachers speak only Spanish with the children, all day
  • Outside at JJ Byrne Playground whenever the weather allows
About
We strive to create a program which minimizes stress in a child's life and maximizes balance, self-respect, and inborn aptitudes.
Our founding philosophy

For families who want Spanish fluency

English will come on its own. Spanish needs a place to grow.

Between 2 and 5, the language a child hears all day is the one that sticks. Everywhere else, that language is English. Here, it's Spanish, giving your child the setting to grow up truly bilingual.

Real Spanish Immersion, all day

Not a Spanish class. Songs, stories, jokes, the words for pouring and counting and making up after a squabble. Everything a two-year-old needs to say, said in Spanish by teachers who speak it with them from arrival to hasta mañana.

Speaking with confidence

Children who use Spanish all day speak it without shyness: on the phone with grandparents, at the dinner table, on the next trip. The language stays a bridge to connect with others, not a school subject.

Friends who speak it too

Your child spends the day with friends who play, sing and make up in Spanish, and you join a small community of Park Slope parents raising bilingual kids.

Traditions, not just vocabulary

Music, food, holidays and stories from across the Spanish-speaking world, so the culture behind the language comes along too.

Ready for dual-language kindergarten

New York City has dozens of dual-language public programs. Our children walk in already at home in Spanish, with their first steps toward reading and writing in it.

Whatever you speak at home, you're welcome.

Children understand their teachers within weeks and start answering in Spanish within months. With parents, we speak English or Spanish.

Edith’s Spanish Immersion Montessori is incredible. Our daughter just got accepted into Hunter College Elementary for kindergarten and I credited Edith a lot for this. Edith and her teachers are caring, intelligent, warm and focused on each child’s individual needs. Edith nurtured our daughter’s intellectual curiosity and desire to be challenged academically. Our daughter is also fluent in Spanish, which is amazing given we don’t speak any ourselves. The space is wonderful and light filled with dual aspect windows. It is a mixed aged class, which we love as allows for different roles as your child ages. It’s a small school with maximum 12 kids across 3 teachers and very flexible on scheduling. We did full time 5 days a week, which worked for us and really maximized the benefits for our daughter. We’ve also found a wonderful community of other parents. It really flies under the radar as a school and it deserves more recognition given how incredible it is. It was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made for our family.

I have one child who completed three years at ISSM, and another who is beginning his third year (Pre-K) there this fall. We love this school beyond words. Edith, the director, truly connects with each child as an individual and strives to adapt to their needs. The assistant teachers have also been wonderful, nurturing, and creative. This is a Montessori school where the kids learn to make choices and exercise independence on what they work on. There is structure, but they work with each child's natural inquisitiveness rather than impose a strict plan. I found it to be a wonderful place for my kids, who have different temperaments and interests. Many families over the years have gone out of their way to stick with ISSM through multiple kids, even through changing life circumstances, which really speaks to what a special place it is. This is a single-classroom facility in BAX, but it's a wide open space, and the teachers rotate the materials throughout the week. For physical activity, there is a trampoline, a slide, a Pikler triangle and ramp, which get rotated in and out of the space as the days go on. They also go outside to JJ Byrne some days. The school has a music teacher visit once or twice a week, to sing and encourage the kids to stand up and dance. I got to participate in some of these lessons when everything was closed in 2020, and I could see for myself why the kids love them! The fact that it's a single classroom also means it is mixed-age, which I also found worked wonderfully for my kids. While sharing the classroom with kids of a different age, I found that it gave them a sense of perspective and empathy. In the older kids, they saw role models, and towards the younger kids, and I saw them develop a sense of nurturing that is very sweet. Their relationship to the classroom and their classmates changed every year as they got older. ISSM is a Spanish-immersion school, and I can also attest to the high quality of their instruction in Spanish. They do a great job maintaining the immersive quality while working with kids of various levels of proficiency. If you value a Montessori education, Spanish immersion, or both, you should definitely check out Imagine South Slope Montessori. Amenities: They visit a nearby playground with the kids some mornings. So they do not have private outdoor space, but they go outdoors nonetheless.

Imagine South Slope Montessori is run by Edith who has incredible passion and talent for nurturing children. She has 2 teaching aids (so 3 teachers total) and a class size max of only 10 children. All teachers speak exclusively in Spanish so your child (like mine) will become fluent in Spanish. My daughter now reads and writes in Spanish. Fantastic facility, very reasonable price, cannot recommend enough.

My two kids, now in second grade and kindergarten, each spent 3 years at Imagine South Slope Montessori. I recommend it without hesitation! It is truly a hidden gem. To answer your specific questions based on our family's experience: 1) Did you also find that your child seemed to have enough time in creative activities and/or just play more generally? My oldest came home each day with several paintings, my youngest not so much. It turned out he just much more enjoyed leafing through books on his own, at age 2. He developed into an early reader, and became more inspired to draw and paint during Pre-K. Meanwhile my oldest took longer to read confidently, but was very craftsy. They both now read above grade-level in English and Spanish, and are as imaginative and creative as can be. I guess this is my long-winded way of saying, yes, each child seemed to get the amount and type of creative activities that they needed, when they were ready to learn from them. I liked that about the Montessori approach, especially at such a young age. 2) Given that so much of Montessori work time is independent, did you also find that your child got a good balance of social / group play and development? During my classroom visits, I observed that although the kids independently choose what to work on, you'll often see 2 or more kids working together (or at least in parallel, for the younger ones) on a given activity. It seems like kids naturally like to do what they see other kids doing, so it worked out that way. As my kids got older, sometimes I would see them helping the younger kids on an activity--so incredibly sweet. This was great for both kids, but especially my youngest, since he got a chance to be the leader and the older kid for a change. They both made great friends there. Just to add a couple of other points that might be interesting for you or others: - For extended hours (past 3pm), it is possible to coordinate drop-off at a nearby Beansprouts (but most families have a nanny or a parent pick up) - Many families depart for Pre-K, partly for the cost savings, but also because they expect their kids would be more challenged if they're around older kids. I am glad I kept both of my kids there until they were ready for Kindergarten. Edith always kept them challenged and engaged, and they each got to be the big kid on campus for a year. They were both beyond ready for Kindergarten.

My two kids, who are now 8 & 10, each spent 3 years with Edith at Imagine. Socially, it was incredible. So much that our kids are still friends with kids from two separate families we met there. Both of my kids are very creative, so much that our 10 year old is currently applying to by audition only arts middle school. They both had a great time and remember Edith and their time there fondly. They were both doing so well that we opted to skip pre-k and keep them there until they were ready for Kindergarten. In school now, they're both doing well socially, are able to work independently, and are both performing academically above grade level.

I wanted to share the incredibly positive experience we've had as a family with Imagine South Slope Montessori (in the BAX building on 5th Ave & 8th St). We moved back to the US from my home country in February. It was the first time our 3 year old daughter was being cared for in a setting outside her home and none of us speak Spanish so there was a lot of change to navigate. We have been so lucky. Edith, the owner & head teacher, has been so wonderful with our daughter and caring for all of us. [Our daughter] has been learning Spanish and is really thriving at the school. She's happy, she's making friends & she asks me everyday if she can go to school today, being disappointed when the answer is no on weekends. The environment & setting is wonderful with large dual aspect windows. My daughter loves to do painting and comes home proudly showing me the artwork she's done everyday. The other parents are lovely and we've found a real sense of community. If you're looking for a Montessori setting, I cannot recommend Edith & her school enough.

Our first child spent 3.5 years going here and they loved it so much! They were always very excited for each day and missed her classmates and teachers during the summer. They worked on reading, writing, maths, art etc. It being a montessori place it was whatever activity your kid was into. They teach empathy and caring for one another. Such a warm environment. The owner, edith is such a special person, she really cares for the children and is such a pleasure to work with. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience! It’s also Spanish immersion which means they only speak Spanish with the children. We don’t speak it at home but it was still easy to communicate with the teachers. And our kid has learned so much of the language and is excited to keep learning more. Children are language sensitive when very young so if you want them to learn, this is the time! We loved it so much that we’re sending out second child there. It really is a beautiful environment. Amenities: Visits to the playground/park

I’ll add that I’ve found it to be an incredibly warm place that understands the changing needs of individual families and children. I really love how responsive they are to each student’s interests and needs from moment to moment. It is such a special place and as someone who was extremely hesitant about sending my daughter to any program I can say that it’s been 100 percent the right choice. My daughter loves it there. They were very sensitive to the fact that this was her first time in any kind of program without me. She’s learning a lot and is happy to go. Im happy to share any more info if it’s helpful. Good luck with your search.

[Our son] was going to Imagine South Slope Montessori before the pandemic started; it’s a teeny little Spanish immersion school in the BAX building ([one of us] is from Argentina so we’re a bilingual household) and we LOVE it. They closed in March but reopened this fall and we started sending him back a few weeks ago, a hard choice but they are doing a great job with ventilation and safety and all the kids wear their masks all day, which really surprised me.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

Read the FAQ
We speak Spanish at home. What does Imagine add?

A whole day in Spanish, with other children, at the age when it matters most. At home your child hears Spanish from one or two people; here they hear it from three teachers and eleven friends, in songs, stories, negotiations over the pink tower, and the words for everything in the room. Most children's Spanish jumps within a few months, and it stays theirs.

Do the teachers really speak only Spanish with the children?

Yes, all day, from buenos días to hasta mañana. Updates to parents come in Spanish or English, whichever you prefer.

How big is the class?

At most twelve children, with three adults in the room: Edith and two assistant teachers.

Come see it for yourself.

Tours take about 30 minutes and children are welcome. We enroll year-round when there's space in the classroom.
